The Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 requires a PCBU to provide and maintain a work environment without risks to health and safety, and that includes electrical equipment. Testing and tagging to AS/NZS 3760:2022 is the recognised way to demonstrate you have met that duty. Many sites, insurers and head contractors also require current tags as a condition of entry or cover.

The interval is set by the environment the equipment works in, not by the type of appliance. It ranges from three months on construction sites to five years for office equipment that never moves. Our frequency guide on this page sets out the common cases, and we confirm the right interval for each area of your site when we quote.

Pricing depends on the number of items, how many sites are involved and how far apart they are, and whether repairs are likely. We quote per item with a minimum call-out, and the quote is fixed before we start — no per-hour surprises. Send through an item count and we will come back with a number.

A typical office floor is done in a few hours. We work around your operation, test area by area rather than shutting everything down at once, and can work outside business hours where a site cannot be interrupted.

It is tagged out and taken out of service immediately, and it appears on your report as a fail with the reason. Most failures are damaged plug tops or leads, which we repair on site during the same visit so the item goes straight back into use.

A tag on every item showing the test date, next due date and technician, and a written report listing each item, its location, its class, its result and its retest date. That report doubles as your electrical asset register and is what you hand to an auditor or insurer.

AS/NZS 3760:2022 requires a Competent Person — someone with the training, knowledge and equipment to carry out the tests and correctly interpret the results. You do not need to be a registered electrician to test and tag portable appliances, but hard-wired equipment is fixed wiring and does require one.

New equipment does not need a full electrical test before first use, but it should be visually inspected and tagged with its in-service date so it joins the retest cycle at the right point.
