Exit and Emergency Lighting

Emergency lighting has one job, on the worst day, in the dark, possibly in smoke. AS/NZS 2293.2 asks you to prove twice a year that it will still do it.

The 90 minute discharge test

The core requirement is a full discharge test: mains power is isolated and the fittings must stay lit for at least 90 minutes on battery. Anything that fades, flickers or drops out before the 90 minutes is up has a failed battery or lamp, which is by far the most common finding on a first visit.

What is inspected

Battery condition and charge, lamp condition, the charging circuit, the physical condition and cleanliness of the diffuser, and whether exit signage is still correct, visible and unobstructed — an exit sign behind a stack of pallets is a finding, not a technicality.

You receive a log sheet listing every fitting by location with its result, which is what a building warrant of fitness inspection or an insurer will ask to see.

How often does emergency lighting need testing in New Zealand?

Every six months under AS/NZS 2293.2, including the full 90 minute discharge test. We schedule the visits so they land at the right interval and send a reminder beforehand.

Do you replace failed batteries and lamps?

Yes. We carry common battery and lamp stock, so most failures found during the test are replaced and retested on the same visit rather than becoming a second job.
